OUR APPROVAL DEPARTMENT
Aside from the coins which we have in sufficient quantity to advertise
in COIN TOPICS, our stock includes a varied selection of both inexpensive
and rare coins. We are always pleased to send such coins on approval to a
collector who has established credit with us. Those who have not sent us
their credit ratings are invited to do so. We will accept a rating from your
bank or one of the merchants with whom you deal.
While it is possible to form a worthwhile collection by buying coins
unseen, we believe that a collector would rather examine a coin before
adding it to his collection. Our approval system will enable you to do this.
When you receive approval lots from us you are under no obligation to make
a purchase. All we ask is that you report on the lot within seven days,
promptly returning coins in which you are not interested.
CONDITIONS OF SALE
Each piece is guaranteed genuine. We have been careful not to over-
rate the condition of any coin. In instances where we have on hand only
one or two pieces of the coins listed, the orders first received are filled.
We cannot guarantee to supply others at the same price.
The condition of a coin is expressed as follows:
M=M1NT — A new coin never in circulation.
V.F.=VERY FINE — From circulation but no signs of wear.
F=:FINE. Slightest sign of wear but still an attractive piece.
V.C.=VERY GOOD — ^Somewhat worn but still desirable.
G=COOD — Worn but type all clear.
POSTAGE
Unless otherwise stated, we pay the postage on all coins and books bought
from us. Postage on the EASY DISPLAY SYSTEM is extra. Insofar as possi-
ble, all orders are filled on the day of receipt.
TERMS
Net cash in advance. We prefer to receive stamps in payment of orders
for a dollar or less. Any items found unsatisfactory may be returned within
five days. Make all remittances by bank check, postal or express order payable j
to Wayte Raymond, Inc. Do not send coin or currency by unregistered mail.

Silver Dollars of the
Chinese Soviet
COIN TOPICS
For the last two decades agents from
Communistic Russia have been active in
many parts of China. While we have no
way of knowing the progress they have
made, we do know that coins bearing the
legend “Soviet Government of all China”
have been issued. Until recently these
coins have been almost impossible to ob-
tain. In Europe they have been selling
for $20 and $25 each. Few have appeared
on the coin market in this . country.
The obverse shows a globe with a sickle
and hammer superimposed, and the legend
“Come and Unite the Proletariat of the
Whole World.” The method used in dat-
ing the coin is of particular interest. In-
stead of following the usual Chinese cus-
tom of dating the coins as so many years
of the Republic, with 1911 as the initial
year, the Soviet authorities have used the
Christian date, and furthermore, written
it in Western fashion, ONE NINE THREE
FOUR. But since Chinese reads from right
to left the inscription actually read. Minted
in 4391.
The reverse legends are translated “Sov-
iet Government of All China” (above),
“Currency minted for Provinces of Szech-
uan and Shensi” (below), and in the cen-
ter “One Dollar”.
One of the reasons for the scarcity of
these dollars was a warning issued by the
Chinese Government that anyone found
having one in their possession would be
put to death. Consequently they disap-
peared rather suddenly.
We have a small lot of these coins that
have been in circulation but will classify as
fine or better. We offer them at:
$7.50 each

A Rare World War Issue
In 1914 when the German army began
marching towards Paris the French Govern-
ment hastily moved the mint headquarters
to Castelsarrasin, in the South of France.
There the machinery was set up in working
order and a small supply of silver one and
two franc pieces struck off. Instead of
bearing the “A” mint-mark, which for
centuries had been used at the Paris mint,
they bore the mint-mark “G”.
A year later, when it became fairly cer-
tain that the city of Paris would not be
captured, the coining machinery was moved
north again.
After the excitement of the war had
somewhat abated, European numismatists
soon exhausted the small issue from the
Gastelsarrasin mint. Today, so scarce are
these pieces that they seldom appear on the
market.

Bronze Pu Money of Ancient China
Seventh to Third Centuries B. C.
There are a number of different types
and many varieties of Pu coins. We have
been fortunate in obtaining a nice selection
of these pieces, many of which are rare and
seldom offered for sale. Each of these is
attributed according to the Catalogue of

Theobold II became Count of Champagne in
1 1 52. He married Mary, daughter of
Louis VII of France. In 1178 he joined

cause of his skill and bravery. He was

Th ree Minor Coins of Lithuania
The most interesting of these three coins
is the small 1 Centas piece. Worth about
one tenth of a cent in our money it im-
mediately became popular in making do-
nations to beggars. The recipients became
so angered over its appearance that they
threw them in the water as fast as they
received them. So the government decid-
ed not to mint any more “beggar’s coins”
which cost more to manufacture than they
were worth anyway.
The obverses of the three pieces, con-
sisting of the 5 and 2 Centai and 1 Centas,
are of the same type showing the Lithuan-
ian horseman to left.
Mint Condition. 3 pieces, 20 cents.

Coins of German East Africa
This one-time German colony was situ-
ated in the east-central portion of the Afri-
can continent. It included an area of 364,-
000 square miles, nearly double the size of
Germany. The population shortly before
the World War was about 8,000,000. In
1 884 the German Colonization Society
gained a foothold there and soon other Ger-
man companies were formed to exploit the
country. In 1888 the German East Africa
Company assumed control over a large ter-
ritory. But the Germans, because of their
lack of diplomacy, were disliked by the nat-
ives. Revolts were frequent and during the
next two decades over 1 00,000 natives
lost their lives resisting the advance of Ger-
man civilization. The loss of this colony
after the World War was a severe setback
to Germany. It is still one of the import-
ant causes of the present unrest in central
Europe.
The first coins were issued in 1890 by
the German East Africa Company. In 1904
the German Government saw fit to claim
the territory as a part of the Empire and
the regular coinage for German East Africa
began. The coins issued by the Company
were all struck at the Berlin mint and bear
the “A” mint mark. As a German colony
the coins bear the mint marks of the Berlin
(A) and Hamburg ()) mints. Some coins
were made at the Tabora mint in Africa
and bear the mint mark “T”.

A Portrait Coin of
Sir Isaac Newton
Many of the necessity coins struck in
England towards the end of the 1 8th cent-
ury were of a commemorative nature. Por-
traits of famous men and women are fre-
quent and such coins fill an important gap
in a collection of portrait coins. We have
a number of farthings on hand, dated 1793,
of this famous natural philosopher who lived
from 1642 to 1727.

Silver Cros Tournois of Philip IV
of France 1268-1314
This king known as “le Bel” or ‘‘the
Fair” was the son of Philip III and his wife
Isabella of Aragon. His reign which began
in October 1285, is one of the most mo-
mentous in the history of Mediaeval Eur-
ope. During it, the papacy was brought
under control, the powerful order of the
Temp'e was destroyed and foundation laid
for the national Monarchy of France. Yet
Philip was an enigma to his friends as well
as to his enemies. A contemporary des-
cribed him as ‘‘the handsomest man in the
world, but unable to do anything but stare
fixedly at people without saying a word”.
Others describe him as amiable, modest
and pious.
The coins he struck are among the fin-
est of that period. We offer silver Cros
Tournois as illustrated.

Coins of the North China
Tsi Tung Government
On November 25th, 1935 the Tsi Tung
Government became independent of the
National Government of China. Situated in
the North of China with Tunghsien as its
capital it comprises about 15,000 square
miles adjoining the Great Wall. The popu-
lation is about four millions. The leaders
of the government are mostly Pro-japanese.
Whether it will remain as an independent
government, become a possession of japan
or revert to the rule of the National Chinese
Republic, is not possible to anticipate.
We have been fortunate in obtaining the
first coins of this new division. The 20,
10 and 5 cent pieces are of nickel, the 1
and Yz cent pieces are bronze. On the ob-
verse of the 20 and 10 cent denominations
is portrayed the pagoda tower that is on
the Great Wall near Tunghsien. All the
pieces are dated 1937 and were struck at
the Osaka mint in japan. We offer the
complete set of 5 pieces in bright mint con-
dition.

Zinc Coins of Annam
Annam is among the few countries
that have used zinc as a coinage metal.
These zinc coins are not rare but are little
known to average collectors because of the
difficulty in classifying them. Because of
their similarity in style, they are often con-
fused with Chinese and Japanese coins. A
small shipment of these coins have come in
and we offer the following pieces.

Mostly in bright mint condition
We offer this collection as a special inducement to collectors
interested in modern coins of the world. Each coin is attributed
in a separate envelope. Many of them are scarce and no longer
obtainable from the original source.
If you were to travel to each of these countries to buy the'
coins individually your total expenses under ordinary circum-
stances would be over $10,000. Or if you were to write 50
correspondents it would cost you at least $10 for postage and
about $25 in labor. And that does not include the trouble you
cause your 50 correspondents, nor the cost of the coins them-
selves.
Though you may be a specialist in a particular series of coins,
owning this little collection will add untold pleasure to your
collecting. Your friends may not be interested in your collec-
tion of die-breaks or dates, but show them 50 coins of 50 differ-
ent countries and immediately you have captured their interest.
